Discussion On Cheating Continues In ‘X-Race In Berlin Today’

The thread X-Race in Berlin today continues to feature rich discussion on cheating & officiating-

We all know who it is in the video and has been this years trouble maker but until he is dealt with (it is being addressed) thru the correct channels we have to be careful what we say. He knows he has been caught clearly on video so right now he is treading on hot coals waiting for a verdict. Also the race director has to start listening to his reffs or they will refuse to umpire races for the pittance they are payed. We are losing skaters because the good guys don’t want to have their chances ripped away from them with a punch in the head from this guy. We really are trying to clean the sport up in this part of the world but it takes one bad apple to spoil it for everybody.

I have to agree with Bill, you can’t let the misfits intimidate you folks, you have to speak up, but then you can’t disagree with Niki either in to be careful on what is being said. Don’t speak alone either, make sure you are all on the same side and speak as a group of sportsmen who want to compete in a fair race and want the sport to grow, so no hatred, no “Lets hurt the competitive team” BS, speak objectively, and straight to the point you want to make, and they will hear you.

Meanwhile two ESPN people came up to me, trying to get me to leave the results as they had announced – they had come back from commercial but we still weren’t finished with the appeal process – they cut to another sport – I informed them that they were wasting my time and contractually we were going to finish our process according to the competition rules.

Marathon Course & Host City- 2009 World Roller Speed Skating Championships

The thread WORLD CHAMPS HAINING 2009 contains Bill Begg’s description of the marathon course and of Haining- host city of the upcoming 2009 World Roller Speed Skating Championships-

The road circuit is about to be layed today, the Chinese have training scheduled for Monday on the road & it appears they will be on the money.

The Marathon course is about 5 km a circuit, no need to get lost hunting for it, one end of it goes past where the Bank Track is & the road circuit is in in the centre of the the marathon track, so all very close together in this small Chinese city of around 600,000 population, virtually no one speaks English.

I went around the Marathon cource today, with officials from Haining Organization & the Police, noting where any little patch up Jobs will be required.

Its a Rectangular course 2 sides about 1.5 Km & the other two about 1 km, at least 3 lanes wide.

So In Colombia we had the win behind the motorbike, as the wrong skater got on it first.

In Spain we had the grabfest at the last Roundabout, the same Nation getting gold each time, by totally unnaceptable actions & no action by judges.

These corners are big & open & its a least a 600 meter straight Joey Mantia or Luca Saggioratto run to the finish.

So lets hope no ugly cheating at this years marathon.

The road circuit is all prepared & about to be laid, with the tar sealer all ready appied to the stone base cemented to keep it firm & not loose & dusty.

It is a very nice looking circuit around 400 meters in length by the look of it.

Anywhere else in the World this late people would be worried, but with an army of workers, anything can be transformed within a day.

I am predicting a great Championships here in Haining in this quiet City of 600,000 people, the locals call it a tiny city, but to New Zealand standards, it is virtually double the size in population of our 2nd biggest Cities.

The people are very friendly, but only about 1 in every 200 speak any English, the city is full of Bicycle Richshaws, I paid the poor women who had to pedal me up a little hill, over a bridge 15 Rnb for a 8 RNb ride, thats about $3 New Zealand.

Now the bigger Vechicles & the Horns rule, but its not to tell you to get out of the road, its mainly to let you know they are there, in the constant game of Dodgems, but like everywhere in China Pedestrian crossings mean nothing, do not be Niave enough to think, that as you are on a crossing with a green light, as you are not. you look both ways 3 times then go, so you never get a clean run, its usually only half way accross at a time.

For you English speaking people & decendants, I was told by a couple of foreingners I bumped into that the Oasis Bar, Sports, Bar & Grill, Cangi River Street was a reasonable quiet place to go, with a great atmosphere for foreigners & an Aussie owned the Bar.

Well a free Pool table in the bar, lots of lovely young ladies circulating & organizing the drinks, this American who had a small table Keg in front of him, that he had just refilled seemed to know his way around, he told me if you want to learn Chinese, you play this Dice game, the problem is, that if you get it wrong, you have to skull your drink , so him and the other two reserves who kept changing saw off a couple of Kegs & 12 Steinlargers later I walked out of the Oasis.

Well the next day the owner arrived at the skating rink with half the staff & his wife, they said they also had lovely Western Food, well they were right there, as their Bacon Cheese & Egg Burger, with some salad & chips was great & honestly one of the nicest burgers I have ever tried, so will full on top steak, Pizzas & Toasted Sandwiches, we can all feel at home.

Great news for English Dinning Legend Vincent Henry, alias Prince of Belair, The Fresh Prince, Mr Kentucky, Mr McDonald & Chicken & Chips, they also have a Chicken Burger on the Menue! So two Kentucky frieds in Haining, plenty of Fried Chicken shops & one opposite our Hotel, that is open till 2am usually, with Chicken Burgers & Chips, plus pick your own barbacue skewers, with everything to select from.

So find your way around, its an interesting city, with the biggest difference, nearly half the middle age female population drive these battery operated Motor Scotters, cost about $350 USA in Shanghai.

Andrew Shatzer- Skating Helps Shatzer Turn Into Big Wheel

Even though he is arguably the most successful athlete at James Buchanan High School, Andrew Shatzer doesn’t always play the part.

“His gym teacher was amazed when he found out how good he was,” said Shatzer’s coach, Patty Leazier. “He was like, ‘No way.’”

MundoPatin shared New Zealand’s line-up for this September’s World Roller Speed Skating Championships taking place in China. You can also view New Zealand’s roster here.

Click here to see who will represent Australia.

Bill Begg shared his thoughts on the New Zealand & Australian teams.

Australia looks to have a solid team, if all are on Form, lets hope the Finster brothers can keep out of Hospital, after the last two Worlds, Mick Bryne has decided to opt for preparing for Worlds in Australia & Daniel Greig will test everything thats waiting for him & senior medals are well within his reach.

New Zealand has not the surety around if of recent years, no Shane Dobbin a 4 x World Champion & Current Marathon Champion, a very big blow for the Kiwi team, Kalon Dobbin has stuggled this season with Injuries & the World Games, did not bring any joy.

And for your enjoyment, click here for videos from 500-meter track races from the Spain World Roller Speed Skating Championships.

Nicole Begg- Goodbye Hong Kong Hello China

Read more of Nicole Begg’s latest here; Goodbye Hong Kong Hello China.

There has been a lot of rain in Asia recently so I will be happy to be able to train in an undercover facility and at normal hours. While I’ve been in Hong Kong and training with the Checker Sports club training usually only starts after 11pm and in the dark. Unfortunately they don’t have a facility specifically for speed skating so they have till wait until the lights are switched of at the basketball/soccer courts and everyone goes home which is usually around 11.15pm.

Belgium’s Wouter Hebbrecht shared a blog entry about the World Championships- Wouter Hebbrecht- On the way to Worlds in China

Out of my personal experience I can tell you that even if you reached the biggest achievement of them all (that would be world champion in our sport), you should always look for a way to get even better if you want to win again and again. That’s another reason our sport is such a great one! Always teaching us there is more to it than just skating as hard as you can! I know if you take a rest your competitor will be out there working hard and that may very well make the difference this coming September!

Venezuela is hosting the 2010 World Roller Speed Skating Championships. You can find a preview here; Mondial 2010 : direction le Venezuela.

Michael Cheek- Indoor Nationals & More

Michael Cheek’s blog is back after a long bread- the latest entry is indoor nats.. and other stuff

Quick World Team stuff.. Made the team for the 6th yr in a row, so I’m going to China for worlds. The team is extremely young, but it’s good. There’s a lot of people going to worlds for their first time, so we’re getting a whole new group introduced to worlds. Which is good, b/c they can go home to their clubs and tell them what they learned. When most of the spots were from NC and FL it was cool for us, but I think it hurt a lot of other clubs.

Indoor nat’s 1 liners…… Way to go Julie, welcome back.. That being said Erin Jackson was a beast… Kirstyn Scales and Zach Lloyd are so cute, and really fast too.. HAHA i think i passed Joey for loudest ovation when introduced at the meet, take that homie(i know you’re way ahead of me for career ovations).. Nick you won elementary, and looked nice doing it, but i still beat you… Huge congrats to Ben Carey, I know Russ is smiling… NSC got everyone buzzin, just wait til it actually pops off…Sullys(or whatever it’s called), good times… Harry and Sammy, you know ya’ll both my guys, but I for sure laughed after the 500m… Stephen Carter may not have quite the speed he used to, but for a spectators, he may still be the best to watch…

Blog Entries, Forum Discussions- USA’s World Team Selected

As many of you already know, USA’s World Team was selected at the recent USA Outdoor National Championships. The links listed below will give you information and insight about the 2009 squad;

That brings me to my next thoughts… and i have talked to alot of people about this, some agree, alot don’t. Outdoor nationals, what is it? is it simply the time to pick the SR/JR world team? or is it actually a United states Outdoor nationals? why do we put so much emphases on Indoor Nationals(upwards of 800-1000 skaters), but not on Outdoor Nationals(150-175 skaters)? I know that there is more divisions, etc in indoor, but there still should be allot more skaters going to ODN!!! Justin Stelly made the SR world team again this year. He deserved it, he skated awesome for it, he earned it, but he turned the spot down to focus on the 2010 Olympic games in Feb.

When Worlds was in China last time the juniors had to bring in $6000 and that’s just for living and travel expenses to worlds. Most of the time that doesn’t include plane tickets to and from residency. It also does not include any wheels and that can be a huge expense too. Unfortunately, the World Team goes to residency to race for 3 weeks in order to get races at Worlds. Skaters do have a concern for having enough sets of wheels for both residency and worlds. So with the wheels added the expenses can shoot up possible $1000+.

So yes rally and support the juniors it’s a hard road to skate down. And it is very stressful on them financially. Many parents have had to make a Gi-normous amount of sacrifices to help their child to fulfill their dream. I am not exaggerating at all when I say this; parents have lost mortgages, cars, and so many more sacrifices so their child can get a shot representing the USA.

New Zealand News- Kalon Dobbin, Nicole Begg, Peter Micheal, DJ Nation, & Ben Alchin

In the thread  New Zealand News (see post #591), Bill Begg shared the latest on Kalon Dobbin, Nicole Begg, Peter Micheal, DJ Nation, & Ben Alchin;

Kalon Dobbin has not retired, he was unfortunately suffering from an injury, that had not cleared up as quickly as it should have, but Like Nicole Begg, who is still not permitted to race, due to blood thinning to prevent Thombouses, there first appearances care likely to be the World Games, 17th, 18th & 19th July in Kaohsiung Taiwan.

Peter Micheal is back in New Zealand training, due to lack of team options, the former 3 times World Junior Champion won all the N.Z. Senior national titles, he chose to go for & its hoped the lack of top of the three training partners & the cold Palmerston North Winter, does not effect his form for Worlds.

It is a worry for N.Z. this year, as to collect Government Funding, we have to secure so many senior medals, with Shane Dobbin out of the team, due to Ice contract committements, DJ Nation struggled to regain good Technical form after comming back from the Ice & the Injuries to there two Stars Nicole & Kalon, who usually ensure the medals are delivered, it is a concern.

Ben Alchin not wanted by the selectors & with the fastest ever Le Mans Official lap time, its time they became a bit more flexible, as the cupboard is becomming very bare & Alchin a former Junior World Medalist, is one of N.Z. Strong Men.

Clara Hughes- Limitless Potential

Clara Hughes‘ most recent journal entry is Limitless Potential

They’re both going to compete in their first Olympics. They have a hunger for excellence that I also feel as I prepare for my fifth. Patrick mentioned people telling him how “the first Olympics are for experience” and “not to worry about results”. He told me didn’t know if there will ever be another. I remember my first Olympics, and how certain people tried to impose those very limitations on me. It only solidified the intense motivation to be better than I ever had. I knew I had the capability to be the best. Why else would I train so much? For experience? I shared these thoughts with Patrick, hoping my words outweighed the other advice.

World Masters Marathon Championships- Italy- September 5th

Good news is the big Pavova meet at the same time, we raced the marathon course last year, the nearest road to the sea & lots of spectators, Sando will organize a freat event, one of the best organizors we have in the sport, with a couple of very good sidekicks, the masters deserve a good event & I trust Sando will bring it to them.

Nicole Begg- Injury Update, Therapy

Here are Nicole Begg‘s latest entries;

Today I also done a range of different exercises focusing on stabilizing my left foot and ankle. All of the activities involved balancing on different wobbly or unstable objects while doing a motion that would compliment skating movements. My ankle is definitely improving and I’m starting to get a better range of movement in it now.

Each day things are improving and looking better, it’s just something that takes time. Although it’s frustrating not being able to race I’m still able to train for the World Games and World Championships and as they say it’s not over until the fat lady sings.

Nicole Begg Won’t Race St. Moritz

In a devastating blow Nicole Begg was not given a clearance to race St. Moritz.

If things go right they will bring her off the Blood thinning tablets the week before the World games, but its a very tight schedule.

She will go into the World games well short on racing, as it will have been 11 weeks since the accident & any racing. Its been a desperate blow for one of the cleanest races out there, after suffering a brocken Jaw last year because of idiotic skating by others.
