The Hell Of The North- By Frank Fiers

The following is Frank Fiers’ account of the 100km race in Hallum- The Hell of the North, by Frank Fiers

“Another breakaway was launched that again we missed, and this one is serious. After 55km my team mates again put themselves in the lead and Pieter-Jan van Eck, after pushing the pace up beyond 50km/h for a long while, eliminates 80% of the pack and decreases the gap to the breakaway – until only seconds separated us. Normally, I would have jumped towards the leaders, but in my head spins the thought that if I want to win this race with these legs, I have to be very careful where I spend my energy.”

“A lot of emotions are flooding through me. How incredible, that we all find this the most beautiful race of the season, just as everybody is completely used-up. We struggle to the finish line. I realize, being 38 years old and starting with this great level of fitness as I did this time, that this was probably one of my last chances to win this race again. The euphoric moment of the regroup of the pack just 10k before the finish line became a devastating feeling. It is an intense moment as the race draws to a close, filled with feelings I know I may not experience again.”

Inline Planet Skate Tip- How To Prepare For An Ultra-marathon

The newest Inline Planet Skate Tip is Francisco Ramirez’ How to Prepare for an Ultra-marathon

Like a lot of skaters, I used to think ultra-marathons were for crazies. I couldn’t understand why anyone in their right mind would submit to these ordeals: battling exhaustion, fatigue, dehydration, muscle cramps, sore feet and the elements for three-plus hours.

Pictures & Reprot- Tour to Tanglewood Training Bike Ride & Inline Skate

Six of us started out on the steamy morning with hundreds of cyclists and made our way out from the shop on a nice route out of town, especially if you have Police support for the left turn onto Silas Creek Parkway. Coming back is fine without support, as it’s basically gently downhill and the only major inroad along the downhill is from the left, at the ramp from I-40. It’s a T with nothing coming from the right and there’s a shoulder there that provides comfort if needed Once you get to Buchanan Street, it’s an easy level stoplight with no stress.
