Great news; the World Games roller speed skating competition kicks off tomorrow with 300-meter time trials. The races, being held in Kaohsiung, will be held July 17th to the 19th.
There’s really too much good material for me to include here, so I’ll share the links and let you explore and find all the good stuff you can dig up-
Been a few days in Taiwan now and I am slowly getting used to the heat. The track on the other hand is another beast to tame; the local skaters look really smooth and are going pretty fast so that doesn’t make our job any easier. In the meantime the NZ. squad has arrived with Kalon Dobbin, DJ Nation and Nicole Begg. The testing of wheels and clocking of times is slowly getting under its way…exciting and fascinating as always. Fastest time clocked so far is 16.00 from the local Wei Lin Lo aka “Silk” and he is proving every single day why he has that nickname…
44.000 spectators cheering on Chinese Taipei entering the stadium…probably one of the nicest moments a sportsmen can go through…simply thrilling! This must be a pretty similar experience the athletes go through at Olympics allthough those stadiums are twice the size of this one. Tomorrow World Games kick of for skating with the 300m Time Trails.
A positive for skating is that nearly every sign I have seen around the city promoting the World Games has a skater on it. There are posters, flags, billboards and flyer’s everywhere around Kaohsiung and I have seen quiet a few ads on the television.
Now we have Colombian & Italian Juniors from last year included as replacements, but yet last time these 3 outstanding youngsters could not be included.
I believe Erica Zanetti had to battle her federation hard to stay in the team she qualified for.
As for the USA, all this emphasis on Inline to Ice is killing you guys off & you are making hero’s of these people insteade of your Roller skaters.
Joey wanted to be there, he is a racer, but the Sponsor wanted that he be at the indoor champs, to prop up his sales, sponsors are great & in these tough times are desperate for a return, as they are all suffering, but National representation for our Claytons Olympics should be paramount & national bodies who preach to us all about Olympics, Mr Aracu & Marotta, how can you allow this to happen, right under your own noses.
The 3 New Zealand skaters there are paying there own expenses total, plus an extra weeks accomodation at the hotel prior to the event & with the track being so difficult, another $1,000 plus minimum to try & cover the wheel, that might work.
Some countries had the Golden Goose to feed off for years & not only the skaters, but 10 officials including a doctor or two, on the gravy train to provide the smorgasboard of drips etc, the most medical staff won the most medals scenario, well now having to dip into there own pockets, a tightening up of hemocrit levels etc once away from there own base, we might come accross other winners, who are hungry because they have to pay everything themselves.
Yes the buck stops with the guys at the top in this case the USA & Italy, treating this important event as you have.
