Derek Parra Becomes US Speedskating Allround Head Coach

He enjoyed the finest moments of his illustrious speedskating career at the Utah Olympic Oval, winning gold and silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics to highlight an historic journey to athletic excellence.

Now, Derek Parra is hoping to rejuvenate U.S. Speedskating another way.

The 39-year-old Parra has been named the organization’s head allround coach, replacing Bart Veldkamp — the four-time Olympian from the Netherlands who unexpectedly resigned for undisclosed reasons earlier this month, forcing the federation to seek yet another new coach with just 10 months until the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Video Interview- Christophe Audoire

Roller En Ligne shared a video featuring China’s roller speed skating team coach Christophe Audoire. He talks about his role as China’s coach, establishing a national training center, developing coaches, and China’s recent medals at the World Roller Speed Skating Championships.

He also speaks positively about roller speed skating’s possible inclusion in the Olympic games.

He also mentions that his athletes train 40+ hours per week! He said that his athletes are in great physical condition and their technique is strong, but they need more racing experience. He said Korea’s skaters took 10-years to reach top levels in the junior men and senior women, and he expects the same type of transition to the top from the Chinese.

Although roller is not much recognized in China, there’s still ample support- enough support that the track they were training on was not standardized, so they tore it up, and rebuilt a brand new indoor track.

Mélange- Home Meet

We had our home meet of this season last Sunday. This was a pretty packed meet, with all novice and standard races done in one day. I still have a big gap with the standard masters, which is the most competitive group with 8 starters on the line.

Candy Wong- Fear & Facing Fear

Sometimes I wonder how this approach hampers my progress. Skating requires a certain dash of fearless attitude. When you’re traveling so fast, how much would it hurt in case of a crash? However, if you do not commit to the corners or the hills out of fear, you are actually less stable.
