Berlin WIC- Bill Begg’s Preview

You can find Bill Begg’s preview and thoughts on the upcoming Berlin World Inline Cup race- find his thoughts in World Cup Topics for 2008

No doubt the Dutch based Cado Motus have the Drums beating now & probaly Dietrich & Desly have brought in a witch Docter to do a rain dance, so the rain Godess Hilde Goevarts can carry on with her great wet weather record, of big wins in wet conditions in Berlin.

If its dry then the strong Turchiarelli & Gomez are also strong contendors, it should be interesting how they come through the Brandenberg gates, on the run to the finish line.

MENS RACE

In the mens Nicolas Iten is very good in the wet, fellow Swiss skater Severin Widmer & Big Roger Schneider are also good wet weather runners, Peter Micheal & Max Presti were big players in the wet last year, the experienced Mattheui Grandgirard featured last year & also was 2nd in the Coni X race Swim, which was won by Venezuelan BONT skater Alexander Bastidas, who backed up his credentials in the World Inline Cup, with a 3rd at the World champs.

What happens in the wet, on some of the slippery & dodgy surfaces, is that it immediately makes things tougher, so this is where some one like Max Presti or Roger Schneider thrive on, but then what we term as the shufflers come into there own, while the Technically correct striders are restricted & have to modify their techniques, so are not as effective, while the shufflers can just skate normally. So you can get upsets like Polands Mazur 4th in Berlin, which was good to see.

If its dry Saggioratto, Zangarini, Rosero, Guyader, Francolini & Mantia will line up with the other top shots in the sprint fromthe Brandenberg gates.

New Season- Rollerdome (Minneapolis, MN)

The Rollerdome in Minneapolis, MN, is gearing up for another season- check out the website for more.

From November through April, the upper and lower concourses of the Metrodome become the Rollerblade Rollerdome, annually hosting upwards of 50,000 inline skaters who come to relax, exercise, train, socialize, or just watch others turn endless effortless laps on the roughly half-mile smooth concrete loop.

Report- Nicole Begg: Pontarlier FIC

Roller Girl: Nicole Begg wrote a report on this past weekend’s Pontarlier French Inline Cup- read it at Pontarlier.

The 34km course snaked through three valleys starting in the city of Pontarlier and ending in Mouthe. It was predominantly up hill but nothing too steep just a lot of long gradual climbs. It was a beautiful race if you were able to admire the views.

Article- 24 Hours Roller Montreal- Rod Willmot (Adapted)

The following text is adapted from an article by Rod Willmot

On September 6-7, Montreal’s Formula-1 racetrack was the venue for 24 Hours Roller Montreal, a relay race for teams of inline skaters that runs for 24 hours straight.

This was the fifth edition, and for the 4th year running Rod Willmot was there as a timekeeper, assisted by Gaétan Rochette who is head timer for Marathon Skating International.

Modeled after a similar race in Le Mans that maxes out at 5,000 skaters (in turn modeled after the legendary auto race), the Montreal event is a ton of fun on a more human scale. At 101 teams totaling 750 participants, this year’s race was perfect.

This race has become one of the premier inline skating events in North America, for several reasons. First, it is the only 24 hour inline race in this hemisphere. Then, the venue: it takes place on the world-famous Formula One race track just adjacent to downtown Montreal giving skaters water, skyline, and parkland views all day and all night. Finally, and maybe most importantly, It i is a very successful fund raiser (for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada) which received a check for $20,000 at the closing ceremony.

Lastly, it has the perfect balance of fun (many recreational skaters) and competition–(the elite teams go “all out” especially in the frenetic closing hours when race strategies are revamped.

The timers used AMB’s ChipX system with Orbits 4 and Mylaps Monitor which gave real time results via a 32 inch monitor mounted in a tent with tables and chairs for all skaters to see the race as it developed. This, plus two other monitors allowed skaters to check their laps at any time during the race.

So how many laps can inline skaters turn out in 24 hours? The winning team, the “Rapid Lap Dogs II” from Ottawa, did 173 laps for 747.36 km. Solo skater Philippe Coussy did 133 laps for 574.56 km, a huge accomplishment which bettered his world record! And, Melissa Vezina was the leading solo female with 78 laps. Finally, did anyone get the license plate number of that guy skating backwards for 24 hours??
